(Royal octavo) 24.5x16 cm (9¾x6¼"), early 20th century three-quarter gilt-ruled red levant morocco & cloth, spines tooled & lettered in gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Handsome set of these sporting classics, with John Leech's inimitable illustrations. Surtees (1805-1864) founded, with R. Ackermann the younger, the New Sporting Magazine in 1831, to which he contributed his comic sketches of Mr. Jorrock, whose adventures to some extent suggested the original idea of Pickwick Papers. Lot Amendments Condition: A few minor scuffs to spines and extremities, two covers dampstained as noted; some scattered light foxing with, slight darkening to colored plates; very good.
