Beschreibung:

Set of Eight George III Brown Painted Rush Seat Branch Chairs Six 19th century, two later Including two armchairs, each formed of branches, raised on legs joined by stretchers. Provenance: Colefax & Fowler, London Inspired by the vogue for 'hermit's huts, hermitages, etc.', as seen at houses such as Badminton and Stourhead, rustic furniture became popular in the mid-18th century. The present set of chairs bears similarities to the designs for 'Garden Chairs' of Matthew (or Mathias) Darly, fl. 1741-73, in A New Book of Chinese, Gothic and Modern Chairs, 1751; illustrated, E. White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, 1990, p. 132. See also, White, ibid., Robert Manwaring The Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend and Companion, 1765, p. 139, pls. 29, 30, for related examples of 'Rural Garden Seats' and p. 141, pl. 28, 'Rural Chairs for Summer Houses'. Continuing in the same aesthetic vein, I. and J. Taylor, The Architectural Library, London, published twenty-five plates of Ideas for Rustic Furniture, proper for Garden Seats, Summer Houses, Hermitages, Cottages, etc. between 1790 and 1795, in a lighter, simpler fashion. C Property from a Garrison, New York Collector
