Venice: Sessa [n.d.-]1560-1562[-n.d.]. Five parts in 1 volume, folio (322 x 230 mm). 4 letterpress part titles, one printed in red and black, each within a woodcut surround, numerous woodcuts, some full-page. 18th-century Italian calf-backed paper-covered boards, the spine in six compartments, morocco lettering-piece in the second, the other compartments with repeat decoration in gilt. Condition : lacking fol.12 in part I and pp.91-94 in part III, title to part I cut down and with early re-margining, blank margins of some other leaves repaired with occasional loss to headlines, some old dampstaining; splits to joints, some surface damage to paper on baords, endpapers creased and split. Sold not subject to return. Provenance: early inscriptions and marginalia in one or more hands (inscription on the first title dated August 1637); J. Bernard (19th-century French? booklabel); Meyer Schapiro (ink signature on front pastedown). a later mixed edition of serlio’s masterpiece, and one of the great triumphs of venetian book- production in the late sixteenth century. This copy from the library of art historian Meyer Schapiro. Serlio first studied drawing and perspective at Pesaro before moving to Rome in 1514, where he became a follower of Bramante. Initially a painter, he studied architecture under Baldassare Peruzzi In this, the first great architectural treatise of the renaissance, Serlio writes of geometry, perspective, classical architecture, and more. Serlio’s text is here ably supported by a plethora of beutifully executed wood-cut archictectural plans, details, perspective schemata, and occasional geometrical figures.
