(Variable, generally light, marking, spotting and dampstaining, unobtrusive marginal worming in early and latter quires, occasional affecting text or illustration, pt i title marked and with tears, neatly repaired and reinserted, ii, G2 trimmed affecting woodcut on verso, v, 3D6 supplied from a copy of the 1551 edition and with blank sections excised and repaired). Late 18th/early 19th-century Italian vellum, spine with gilt leather lettering-piece, green edges (marked, extremities rubbed, unobtrusive worming on lower pastedown, small piece of spine missing, lettering-piece rubbed and chipped). Provenance : early inscription on final leaf -- 19th-century notes in Italian on free endpapers -- pressmark labels on upper pastedown and spine -- J. Tiranti & Co., London (bookseller's ticket). 'The first genuine advance in architectural illustration seems to have been made by Serlio, and his Libro Terzo set the type of architectural illustration in Italy for the rest of the century' (Fowler 308).
