SELLER, JOHN (fl. 1658-1698). A Pocket Book containing severall choice collections in Arithmetick Astronomy. Geometry. Surveying. Dialling. Navigation Astrology. Geography. Measuring. Gageing. [London]: sold by him at the Hermitage in Wapping and at his shoop [sic] in Pope's Head Alley in Cornhill, [1677?]. 8° (136 x 81mm). Engraved title, 40p. text, and 79 engraved leaves containing tables, plates and maps, 21 double-page [ESTC calls for 77 engraved leaves]. Title and 4 plates hand-coloured. (Some paper adhesion affecting title, small burn-hole in one map, a few marginal stains.) Contemporary calf (rebacked in the 19th century, corners worn). Provenance : John Jackson of Academy Place, Warrington (bookplate). FIRST EDITION OF SELLER'S POCKET BOOK. Combining useful general knowledge with the functions of a ready reckoner, it includes 24 engraved maps, both terrestrial and celestial. The miniatures of Europe (hand-coloured), Asia, Africa, and America are each on a single leaf, and were later used by Seller for playing cards. The remaining 20 maps are on 17 double-page leaves, all conforming with the maps listed by Shirley for the third edition, dated [1682?] in Wing (the Kingdome of England is hand-coloured). RARE.
