SCULTETUS, Johannes (1595-1645). \KHeiroploqhkh\k, seu Armamentarium chirurgicum XLIII. Ulm: Balthasar Kühnen, 1655.
SCULTETUS, Johannes (1595-1645). \KHeiroploqhkh\k, seu Armamentarium chirurgicum XLIII. Ulm: Balthasar Kühnen, 1655. 2° (362 x 224mm). Title in red and black with woodcut device. Text in double column. 43 numbered engraved plates. (Title soiled at margins, some soiling and staining to plates, plate 38 misbound and with repaired tears slightly affecting image and margin, plate 40 cut short at outer margin, plate 41 with slight marginal tear and old repair, Ee1 and Ee4 with extensive repairs touching on text.) Contemporary vellum (soiled, closed tears to spine). Provenance : Johannes Petrus Difenbach 'Med. Cad.' (inscription on front blank dated Frankfurt, 1669, with later additions and erasures). FIRST EDITION of the Armamentarium , a surgical treatise of lasting importance, published a decade after the author's death by his nephew, Johannes Scultetus the Younger. Numerous editions in quarto and octavo followed but none others in folio with plates on this grand scale. Scultetus or Schultes, pupil of Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente and Adriaan van de Spiegel at Padua, himself city physician of Ulm, was rivalled only by Fabry von Hilden as the leading surgeon in Germany. His 'Arsenal of Surgery' gives a complete picture of 17th-century surgical practice. Of the 43 large engravings, 22 form a catalogue of surgical instruments, while the rest illustrate the brutal methodology of operations dealing with broken or dislocated limbs, amputations, cancers, obstetrical delivery by forceps, eye problems, tooth extractions and even neurosurgery, with special attention to bandaging. One hundred case reports are included in the text. BL/STC German 17th-century S-1741; Garrison-Morton 5571; Heirs of Hippocrates 466; NLM/Krivatsy 10746; Norman 1912.
