SCLATER, Philip Lutley and Oldfield THOMAS. The Book of Antelopes. London: Taylor and Francis for R. H. Porter, 1894-1900. 4 volumes, 4° (285 x 210mm). Titles with vignettes of antelope, 100 hand-coloured lithographic plates mostly by J. Wolf and J. Smit, numerous illustrations. (Fore-edges slightly spotted.) Contemporary green half morocco, gilt, t.e.g. (spines faded), with original wrappers for each part, and temporary title pages and provisional contents lists for volumes I to III bound in. Provenance : Frederick DuCane Godman (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION, which was originally issued in seventeen parts. Many of the plates were commissioned by the naturalist Sir Victor Alexander Brooke, who had published several papers on antelopes, and who was collecting specimens, drawings and notes for a work on bovine animals. On his death in 1891, he left over one hundred lithographic plates, which were used by Sclater, with an entirely new text, as the basis of this work. Nissen ZBI 3784. (4)
