Wood-engraved vignette on titles, 100 hand-coloured lithographic plates by and after J. Smit and J. Wolf, printed by M. & N. Hanhart, wood-engraved illustrations. Contemporary cloth, antelope stamped in gilt on front covers, spines ruled and lettered in gilt. Provenance : W. Rushton Parker, M.D. M.R.I. (label on pastedown dated 15 January 1923 presenting the book to the Royal Institution). FIRST EDITION, A FINE COPY OF A BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK . The plates were prepared under the supervision of Sir Victor Alexander Brooke who died in 1891 without having completed the text. Sclater therefore wrote a new text in partnership with Oldfield Thomas who provided the synonymy and scientific descriptions.
