SCHUYLER, Philip John Major General, Continental Army . Autograph letter signed ("Ph: Schuyler") to Stephen Van Rensselaer (1764-1839), Poughkepsie, 2 July 1788. 1 pages, folio, integral autograph address panel, torn seal, fold separation on blank portion . VIRGINIA RATIFIES THE CONSTITUTION; WILL NEW YORK? Schuyler, a dedicated Federalist closely connected with the efforts to secure ratification of the Constitution in New York (deliberations had begun on 17 June in Poughkeepsie), passes on important news: "Less than half an hour ago Col. William Smith arrived...from New York the dispatches he brought announced the adoption of the new Constitution by Virginia on Wednesday the 25th: by a majority of ten in the favor. I congratulate you on this very important occassion with all that satisfaction which arises in the heart impressed with the danger to which the country would probably have been exposed had the determination of Virginia been adverse. I trust this event will have a proper influence on the minds of those in the [New York] Convention here who have not totally resolved to...steel their hearts against all conviction. I do believe...that several of those in Opposition who came with prejudices created by influence will not sacrifice their Country to the Obstinacy of certain desperados." Of his son-in-law he writes: "Col. [Alexander] Hamilton is well" and adds a postscript: "Pray let our friends be prudent in rejoicing on this occasion." Virginia was the tenth state to ratify; after prolonged and energetic persuasion by Hamilton, New York narrowly approved the Constitution by a margin of 30 to 27.
