SCHEFFERUS, Joannes (1621-1679). Lapponia . Frankfurt: Christianus Wolffus, 1673. 4° (197 x 152mm). Engraved frontispiece dated 1674, fold-out map, 25 woodcuts (6 full-page) of the Sami and aspects of Sami culture. 20th-century calf gilt by Gustaf Hedberg, morocco spine labels, red speckled edges, marbled pastedowns and endpapers, modern paper slipcase. Provenance : Elof Förberg (booklabel). FIRST EDITION. FINELY BOUND BY HEDBERG. Schefferus was among a number of foreign scholars invited to Sweden by Queen Christina. There, in 1648, he took up the post of Professor in Rhetoric and Political Science at the University of Uppsala, teaching government officials. In 1671 he was commissioned by the Marshal of the Realm, Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie, to produce 'a new and truthful description of the Sami land and its people' in order to refute foreign propoganda which attributed Swedish military successes to Sami magic. The resulting work, Lapponia , was the first comprehensive work on the Sami people drawn on information supplied by priests working among them. It was originally printed in Latin and modern language translations soon followed. It was not, however, translated into Swedish until 1956. As well as describing the language and culture of the Sami people, Lapponia also contains two Sami yoik poems, the oldest written text of a Sami yoik poem.
