April 24th & 25th 1865. A scarce Currier, this image is based on the photograph taken by Jeremiah Gurney when Lincoln's body was on view in New York. Hearing that Gurney had been allowed to photograph the body, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton ordered the immediate seizure of the negative, and had it destroyed. A single print, found in Stanton's papers, is the only known surviving photograph (Kunhardt and Kuhnhardt 1965:162-62. Condition: Not examined outside of frame, evenly toned, VG-.
