SAYER, Robert (publisher). A Collection of One Hundred and Sixteen Perspective Views in Great Britain and Ireland. London: for Robert Sayer 1774. Oblong 2° (358 x 543mm). Letterpress title in English and French, contents list in English and French, 115 (only, of 116) engraved views of London, Edinburgh, Dublin and other cities, mostly captioned in English and French, including a folding plan of London in 1787, by and after T. Bowles, R. West, W. H. Toms, T.M. Müller, J. Rigaud, P. Angier, A. Heckel and others. (Lacking plate 13, of St. Bride's Church, plate 77 with short, clean tear to outer margin, plate 90 shaved to platemark, occasional very light spotting, heavier on plates of Dublin, and final 6 plates, title and contents leaf neatly strengthened at inner margin.) Contemporary boards (rebacked and cornered, later endpapers). An extensive collection of views of the British Isles, in good condition, most plates with wide margins. The present work includes reissues of several earlier series of views, first issued between circa 1730 and 1770. To form the Collection , Sayer added a new title-page and list of contents, and re-engraved the numbers and imprints on some plates to correspond. Most of the plates are listed in Sayer and Bennett's Catalogue of Perspective Views of 1777, including four after drawings by Canaletto. The majority of the plates show views of London and its environs (plates number 1-86 and 99-102), including major buildings in the City and at Westminster, as well as scenes at Richmond, Vauxhall, Ranelagh, Chiswick and in the "Villages" of Kensington, Battersea, Wandsworth, Putney, Barnes and Fulham. Fourteen of these plates show London churches, and are apparently re-issues of the series of views issued by the artist Robert West and engraver William Henry Toms in 1736-7. The London views are followed by views of Oxford (3), Cambridge (1), Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight (3), Worcester (2), St. Vincent's Rock and the River Avon (2), St. Winifred's Well, North Wales (1), Scotland, including Edinburgh, Leith, Stirling, Inverlochy, Clydesdale, Bothwell and Dumbarton (8) and Dublin (6). B. Adams, in London Illustrated 1604-1851 , 1983, no. 191, discusses Laurie's 1840 reprint of a number of these views, but the present collection is not known to him.
