SAY, Thomas (1787-1834). Descriptions of some new terrestrial and fluviatile shells of North America. 1829, 1830, 1831. New Harmony, Indiana: 1840. 8° (207 x 127mm). Modern paper-covered boards. RARE. In the foreword Say's widow Lucy explains that the unillustrated work contains 'a complete list of such [shells] as were omitted in [Say's "American Conchology"]'. Thomas SAY. American Conchology, or descriptions of the shells of North America. Illustrated by coloured figures from original drawings executed from nature. New-Harmony, Indiana: printed at the School Press, 1830[-1838]. 7 parts in three volumes (parts I-V in one vol, 8° [217 x 138], parts VI & VII, 8° [250 x 150mm.]). 68 hand-coloured engraved plates by C. Tiebout, L. Lyon and I. Walker, after Lucy Say or Charles A. Lesueur. (Plate 6 loosely inserted from another copy, plates browned and with occasional spotting, plates 51-60 with marginal tears, plate 60 creased, text in volume containing parts I-V browned and spotted.) One vol. containing parts I-V: 19th-century half morocco (worn, covers detached); parts VI-VII: original paper wrappers (backstrip split, small marginal tears with slight loss). Provenance : Geo, W. Tryon (inscription dated 1855 on front pastedown of vol. containing parts I-V). A COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT EARLY AMERICAN CONCHOLOGY, WITH COLOURED PLATES THROUGHOUT.
