SAY, Thomas (1787-1834). American Conchology, or descriptions of the shells of North America. Illustrated by coloured figures from original drawings executed from nature. New-Harmony, Indiana: printed at the School Press, 1830[-1838]. 7 parts in two volumes (parts I-VI in one vol, 8° [208 x 135mm], part VII, 8° [250 x 150mm.]). 68 hand-coloured engraved plates by C. Tiebout, L. Lyon and I. Walker, after Lucy Say or Charles A. Lesueur. (Plates 6, 16, 19 and 20 spotted, plates 54, 56-60 browned, occasional offsetting of text onto plates, text with some browning and spotting, occasionally heavy.) One vol. containing parts I-VI: 20th-century roan-backed boards (extremities scuffed); part VII: original blue paper wrappers (backstrip split, small marginal tears with slight loss). Provenance : Quebec Literary & Historical Society (two small ink stamps to title of vol. containing parts I-VI). RARE COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT EARLY AMERICAN CONCHOLOGY, WITH COLOURED PLATES THROUGHOUT, written and printed at Robert Owen's Utopian community of New Harmony, Indiana. Part VII was published posthumously and edited by T.A. Conrad. Bennett American Nineteenth Century Color Plate Books p.94; BM(NH) IV,p.1817; Nissen ZBI 3614. (2)
