SAUSSURE, Horace-Bénedict de (1740-99). Voyages dans les Alpes, précédés d'un essai sur l'historie naturelle des environs de Geneve . Geneva: Barde, Maget & Companie, 1787 (vols. 1-2) and Geneva and Paris: Barde, Maget & Co. at Geneva and Buisson at Paris, 1786 (vols. 3-4). 4 volumes, 8° (201 x 126mm). 2 folding engraved maps, 13 folding engraved plates by Bourrit and Geissler after Geissler, Töpfer, and Wexelberg, and 6 folding letterpress tables. (Quire B in vol. I misfolded in binding, small wormtrack in first leaves of vol. 4, very light browning in vol. 4, ?lacking preliminary leaves a2 in vol. 1 and A2 in vol.2, short, neat tears at folds of a few plates.) Contemporary speckled calf, flat spines, leather spine labels, speckled edges (a few minor splits at hinges). Provenance : William John Campion Danny (bookplate). Saussure's complete work comprises 4 volumes, but the final two volumes were not published until 1796; the present edition reprints the two volumes which had already appeared in 4° format at Neuchâtel in 1779 and at Geneva in 1786. Saussure was a noted scientist as well as mountaineer. The Voyages contains not only a study of the Alps, its structure, formation and environs, but also a discourse on electricity and the measurement of heights. Lonchamp 2615. (4)
