Beschreibung:

SAMSON & CO. Atelier (designers). [An album containing sixty original botanical designs for porcelain]. [Paris: 1845 or later]. Oblong 4° (215 x 265mm). 60 original pen, ink and watercolour designs of bouquets and sways. Contemporary French brown straight-grained morocco, covers elaborately tooled in gilt and blind, with a single gilt fillet enclosing a wide decorative roll of scrolling foliage in blind, the large inner panel with elaborate cornerpieces of stylised window-tracery in gilt over onlays of red, pink, light and dark green and olive morocco, all surrounding a large centrally-placed arabesque over onlays of yellow, pink, light and dark green, blue and purple morocco, flat spine divided into six compartments by gilt rules, gilt turn-ins, modern tan cloth box. A RARE COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR DESIGNS FOR PORCELAIN, by the Samson factory of Paris. These finished designs were apparently intended as a source of reference from which the porcelain painters could work. The watercolours show variously-sized vignettes composed of bouquets of two or more flowers. The images have a stylized beauty to them that hinders precise identification, nonetheless, a number of species are recognisable: roses, pinks, carnations, tulips, periwinkles, grapes, plums, pears, asters, convolvulus, bluebells etc. The French porcelain manufactory of Samson & Cie. was established at Saint-Maurice near Paris in 1845. They became known for a wide range of porcelain and faience but specialized in high quality copies of earlier or foreign wares. Samson borrowed designs from various factories including early Derby and Sèvres, blue and white Delftware, Chinese armorial porcelain, Meissen figures and 'Gold Anchor' Chelsea.
