Left hand drive. Although it looked similar to its predecessor, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II, as introduced in September 1959, was the beginning of a new era for the famous Crewe company. Answering the demands for greater power, particularly in the face of ever bigger-engined American rivals, Rolls-Royce had designed an all new light alloy 6,230cc V8 for the Cloud. This had a dramatic effect on the car's performance as top speed was now up to 115mph, having previously been a little over 100mph, and was accompanied by the kind of acceleration only a big-engined sports car could equal, and all achieved with hardly any increase in fuel consumption. It was an engine at the beginning of its life, fit to be refined, tuned and developed as Rolls-Royce knew so well how to do. Road-tested by The Motor , a standard wheelbase Silver Cloud II notched up a two-way average of over 117mph. Acceleration was equally satisfactory, 0-60 mph in 10 seconds, taking the car into sports car realms. The car offered for sale here has a fabulous history as it has been in the same family ownership from new. Ordered by the present gentleman owner's parents, the new Cloud was built to US specification which is confirmed by copies of the build sheets on file. Extras included a radio, split bench-type front seat, plain Sundym glass throughout, a speedo in both miles and kilometers and an interesting option of a rev counter mounted in place of the driver's cubby hole. Taking delivery in August 1961, the proud new owners first toured Scotland in the car before having it shipped to the United States from Liverpool to New York and then on to Lake Forest, IL where it arrived in September the same year. Between the Fall of '61 and 1977 the Rolls-Royce was used and kept garaged on the family estate and then passed to the current gentleman when his father passed away. The car remained at the family home and in 1988 the decision was taken to completely restore the car. The extensive mechanical restoration was undertaken by Lawrence Courtney of the Rolls-Royce specialist firm Import Service Inc. in Evanston, IL. Then the car was taken to The Last Detail, Inc. restoration shop in North Chicago who undertook a complete body restoration which included removing any rotten metalwork and replacing with new, Waxoil treating and then a back-from-baremetal repaint. The interior upholstery was repaired as necessary and new Wilton carpet was fitted. The air conditioning compressor was also renewed and the rear air conditioning vents were repaired. Invoices on file document all the work that amounted to $31,500 at the time. Since then a further $5,500 has been spent, the most recent work being a full inspection last August and freeing up of the fuel pump and float needles. The recorded mileage now is a modest 52,000. Offered for sale for the first time in 42 years, this Cloud II Rolls-Royce has an impeccable history and the benefits of power steering and rear air conditioning, promising a very rewarding drive for a new owner.
