Beschreibung:

Salomon August ANDRÉE (1854-1897) - North Pole balloon attempt Letter signed by G.W. Ballingall of the Distillers Company, Edinburgh, to Andrée, Edinburgh, 27 April 1897, 2 pages, folio . A letter of support, promising Andrée a 'splendid reception' in Scotland on his return from 'what we are almost certain will be a most successful expedition', warning him of the legendary settled presence of a Scotsman at the North Pole, and informing him of the dispatch of two cases of 'D.C.L.' whisky for his expedition, with the wish that he 'might...be able to send us a photograph [of himself drinking whisky at the Pole] shewing the party with glasses in hand looking as if they were fully appreciating the contents thereof'. After an abortive attempt the previous year, Salomon Andrée took off on his attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon on 11 July 1897. The balloon quickly ran into trouble, rising and falling alarmingly with the changing temperature and humidity. By the afternoon of 12 July its gondola was being dragged along the ice; it crashed the next day, 200 miles from land. Andrée and his two companions, with or without their whisky, set off on foot and canoe over the ice floes; by October they had reached White Island, off Spitzbergen. Their skeletons were found there in 1930 by a whaling ship.
