SALLUSTIUS Crispius, Caius (86-34 B.C.) La conjuracion de Catilina y la guerra de Jugurta. Spanish translation attributed to Infante Don Gabriel, revised by Francesco Perez de Bayer. Madrid: Joachim Ibarra, 1772. 2° (354 x 250mm). Spanish text in italic type, Latin in roman at foot of the page. Engraved title by E.Montfort, engraved map of North Africa, medallion portrait and 8 plates by E.S.Carmona, J.Ballester, F.Assenio and others after M.S.Maella and others, 7 headpieces, 5 culs-de-lampe and 27 vignettes. Contemporary ?English red straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with narrow fillet and roll-tool border, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, blue morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others decorated with various small tools, surrounding either a cornucopia or flower spray, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, g.e. (very light rubbing to head and foot of spine and corners), modern morocco-backed cloth. Provenance : Countess Cowper (armorial bookplate). First Ibarra edition. A fine copy of one the most beautiful books of the eighteenth century. Palau 288134; Cohen-de Ricci 938 ("l'un des chefs-d'oeuvre de l'imprimerie espagnole").
