Very large historiated initial 'S' cut from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM [Florence, Circle of Don Silverstro dei Gherarducci, ca. 1400] Miniature 200 x 170 mm. plus extension (part leaf 305 x 315 mm.). The saint standing, wearing a white garment, holding a book, the stones signifying his martyrdom within the nimb on his blond hair. Initial blue with orange, green and pale blue foliage on burnished gold ground. Surrounded by three lines of text and music on red 4-line staves; music also on verso. This is the introit for the Mass of the Feast of St. Stephen on 26 December. It may come from one of the choirbooks made for the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli where Gherarducci worked. AN UNUSUALLY LARGE INITIAL.
