SADLER'S WELLS -- An album of printed ephemera and engraved portraits, either mounted or loosely inserted, relating to Sadler's Wells Theatre, c. 1729-1856. 2° (380 x 280mm). 19th-century half roan, spine titled in gilt: 'Sadlers Wells Theatre Illustrated Original Bills Curious Prints' (worn).
SADLER'S WELLS -- An album of printed ephemera and engraved portraits, either mounted or loosely inserted, relating to Sadler's Wells Theatre, c. 1729-1856. 2° (380 x 280mm). 19th-century half roan, spine titled in gilt: 'Sadlers Wells Theatre Illustrated Original Bills Curious Prints' (worn). This remarkable collection includes an original watercolour of an English riverside house (S. 260 x 340mm), possibly the model for a scene backdrop; news cuttings advertising performances at the Haymarket and Sadler's Wells, dated 1764-80 in ms; The Doctor's Song sung by Mr. Andrews at Sadler's Wells in Harlequin Quack , dated 1729 in ms, and other music sheets; an [?]18th-century broadside headed The Farmer's Song ... sung at Sadler's Wells , and a later example Call Again Tomorrow by C. Dibin (1808); two 18th-century 2s. tickets for the Pit at Sadler's Wells; 16 playbills, most early 19th-century and many for pantomimes, including two for the 'Aquatic Theatre Sadlers's Wells', one dated 1812 offering 'a magnificent aquatic spectacle on real water', others for Robinson Crusoe with Grimaldi (1814) and Tom and Jerry (1822). Among material relating to the case of Elisabeth Canning, the servant girl who claimed she was abducted by Mary Squires and 'Mother Wells', are the two broadsides: The Devil Outdone, or Elisabeth Canning in the Suds and The Case of Elizabeth Canning (8 February 1753).
