SADELER, Marcus (fl.1586-1629) and Aegidius SADELER (1570-1629)]. Vestigi delle antichita di Roma, Tivoli, Pozzuolo et altri luochi . Prague: Aegidius Sadeler 1606. Oblong 2 o (290 x 412 mm). Engraved title-page, dedication, and 49 plates by and after Sadeler. (Washed, dedication leaf and last plate with minor marginal repairs, title-page and dedication leaf with tears crossing images skillfully repaired.) Later limp vellum, modern red morocco lettering piece along spine (some minor soiling, front cover slightly bowed); quarter vellum folding case. Provenance : John Evelyn (1620-1706), diarist and writer (his purchase note on the dedication leaf dated "1644", modern bookplate; sold Christie's London, 16 March 1978, lot 1277). FIRST EDITION, JOHN EVELYN'S COPY, of Sadeler's rare collection of views illustrating ruins in Rome, Tivoli, and Pozzulo. Here reproduced in smaller format, the plates derive chiefly from those by Etienne DuPérac published in 1575. The Sadeler's were members of the largest and most successful family of Flemish engravers and printmakers dominant in North Europe throughout the late 16th and much of the 17th centuries. Berlin Kat. 1855; Brunet V, 23; Fowler 283 (second edition).
