Engraved frontispiece and 100 erotic plates, unsigned but in the style of Bornet. Foliation as in Cohen-de Ricci, but 9, not 8, plates in vol. VI. (Some spotting and small stains, rarely affecting plates, light browning at end of vol. VII.) Contemporary French tree calf, narrow gilt border around sides, flat spine gilt in compartments with green leather title and volume labels, blue endpapers, gilt edges (very discreet repair at foot of vol. I). FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF THE "NEW" JUSTINE AND JULIETTE , CONTAINING SADE'S MOST COMPLETE VERSION OF THESE EROTIC NOVELS. Sade's first published work was Justine , which appeared in 1791. Six years later he published the present edition, an enlarged re-working of the same story entitled La nouvelle Justine , which was further augmented by a continuation entitled L'Histoire de Juliette, sa soeur . A bogus publisher's note, which prefaces the 1797 edition, claims that the previous (1791) work was a mere summary and that what is now published is the full, original portrait of Justine and Juliette. Its popularity, no doubt aided by the 101 obscene illustrations, was immediate -- Restif de la Bretonne claimed that it was on sale in all the Palais Royal bookshops -- but only one year later it was actively suppressed, and Sade himself was imprisoned in 1801 under the moralistic regime of Napoleon (cf. G. Lely, The Marquis de Sade , 1961, chapter 16). According to A. Bonneau, a 1796 edition of Juliette exists, but no copy is known and its precedence is doubted (Appolinaire, et al. L'Enfer de la Bibliothque Nationale , p.250). Cohen-de Ricci distinguishes two editions printed in 1797, declaring that the first, notable for its more correct text, is the better. The two parts of this edition were also available separately, and numerous later editions which retained the imprint "en Hollande 1797" were printed. Cohen-de Ricci 920-922; G. Appolinaire, et al., L'Enfer de la Bibliothque Nationale , Paris: 1919, p.241ff., esp. 247-250; P. Pia, Les livres de l'enfer du XVI e m e sicle nos jours , 678-79; P.J. Kearney, The Private Case, an annotated bibliography of the private case erotica collection in the British (Museum) Library , London: 1981: p.303. (10)
