Half-title, title-page and text printed within a green ornamental border, facsimile reproduction of a portion of the original manuscript. Contemporary brown half morocco, marbled boards, edges green (light rubbing). FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 98 of 160 copies printed on verge paper, from a total edition of 200 copies. The marquis wrote this most Sadistic novel of all during his incarceration at the Bastille, in tiny manuscript on a long narrow scroll, which he was forced to abandon among his personal effects on being moved by the prison governor the night before the storming (3-4 July 1789). After having been found, and kept in the same family's possession until the end of the 19th century, it ended up in Germany where de Sade's biographer, the psychiatrist Ivan Bloch (1872-1922), published it for the first time, under his bland pseudonym Eugéne Dühren.
