Title: Sacramento Illustrated Author: Barber & Baker, publishers Place: Sacramento Publisher: Barber & Baker Date: 1855 Description: 36 pp. 33 wood engravings. 13¾x10½, original tan printed wrappers. First Edition. "Contains the earliest views of Sacramento with extensive historical descriptions." (Greenwood 547). "Barber and Baker compiled this early history of Sacramento from directories, city council records, newspaper files, and information supplied by such important early pioneers as J.A. Sutter, Reverend Benton, L.W. Hastings, and Colonel Zabriskie, as well as Barber and Baker's own recollections. The engravings afford the best systematic published pictorial study of a Gold Rush City. The publishers also issued pictorial letter sheets duplicative of many of the views in their book" (Kurutz 35). “A work of much interest. George H. Baker, who came to California in 1849, was an artist of much ability.” (Cowan II, p. 34). Streeter sale 2777; Greenwood 548; Howes B127; Kurutz, The California Gold Rush 35a; Cowan II, p. 34. Lot Amendments Condition: Wrappers chipped, heavily on rear with some loss of text, modern backing; pages with numerous short tears (most with restorations), a few unrestored marginal chips, some staining and foxing; else very good. Item number: 200614
