RUXTON, George Frederick Augustus (1820-1848). Adventures in Mexico and the Rocky Mountains . New York: Harper & Brothers, 1848. 2 volumes, 12 o (195 x 128 mm). ORIGINAL BROWN WRAPPERS, PRINTED PAPER TITLE LABELS MOUNTED ON COVERS (some chipping at edges). Provenance : Alfred Jacob Miller (1810-1874), Western artist (signatures on title and wrapper). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. "George Frederick Ruxton had served in the British Army in Canada as an officer in the 89th Regiment of Foot, but he had found the constraints of military life oppressive and sold his commission to become a voyageur , spending the winter of 1843-1844 in the wilds of Ontario and northern New York with an Indian friend" (Wagner-Camp-Becker 139:2). A VERY FINE ASSOCIATION COPY: Born in Baltimore, Alfred Jacob Miller moved to New Orleans in 1837 and was selected by Capt. William Drummond Stewart as artist to record a journey to the Rocky Mountains (see lot 241). The expedition journeyed by wagon along what was to become the Oregon Trail. Miller sketched the Native Americans along the way and also recorded the rendezvous of the mountain men in what is now southwestern Wyoming. Miller returned to Saint Louis with about 166 sketches which were later developed into oil paintings while in New Orleans and Baltimore. Howes R-553; Rader 2856; Sabin 74501. VERY SCARCE IN WRAPPERS.
