Dutton Date: 1908 Description: xvi, 408 pp. With color frontispiece from painting by A. Fitzgerald; 30 photogravure plates, including 5 folding panoramas, most by Vittorio Sella; 5 folding maps; 1 halftone plate, & numerous halftones in the text. 10¼x7¼, red cloth lettered in gilt. First American Edition. Account of the first ascent to the summit of the Ruwenzori Range in Uganda and Congo in central Africa. Now called the Rwenzori Mountains (the spelling having been changed in about 1980 to conform more closely with the local tribal name), the first European sighting of which was by the 1889 Henry Morton Stanley expedition, the highest Rwenzoris are permanently snow-capped. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine ends frayed, some spotting to cloth, front hinge cracked' some foxing; else very good. Item number: 179592
