Coloured lithographs throughout. With manuscript annotations in Arabic (5), English (17), French (16), Greek (13), Russian (16) and 9 others, and 13 pen and ink drawings, including one of Alexander III muzzling the British Lion (1 November). With 2 leaves inserted inscribed by Paul, Athens, 6 December 1884; Valdemar, Athens, 2 January 1885 and 'Nicolas Cesarévitch 1889 Athènes 3 Novembre', and with a four-line stanza in Russian written by Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich and a sentiment in French by his wife Grand Duchess Elizaveta Mavrikievna, both dated St. Petersburg, 4 May 1887. Later blue half calf, gilt edges, cloth slip-case (spine slightly rubbed). Provenance : Mary Bakhmetieff (inscriptions).

The commonplace book of Mary Bakhmetieff, including manuscript entries by Tsarevich Nicholas, later Nicholas II, Grand Duchess Ol'ga Konstantinovna as Queen Olga of the Hellenes, and her children, with other entries, mostly dated Athens May 1886 to April 1889, including members of the crew of USS Kearsarge . Written at an interesting period of the history of the Balkans, with Bulgarian independence with Russian help, the polital climate of Greece with agitation in Crete, the Macedonian question, and relations with the Ottoman Porte, and the Great Powers exercising their influence in the area.
