RUSH, Benjamin (1746-1813), Signer (Pennsylvania) . Autograph note signed ("Benj. n Rush"), 26 April 1809. 1 page, oblong, laid down on card . A DOCTOR'S NOTE FROM A FOUNDING FATHER. Pennsylvania's famous physician-Founder gets a soldier out of militia duty: "Thomas Bowman being much indisposed with a chronic disease is unfit for militia duty. This disease is moreover of that nature that violent exercise, heat, cold and long standing upon his feet are all calculated to bring on an attack of it." Rush was near the end of his long and productive life when he writes this note. His heroic efforts in combating yellow fever epidemics brought him national renown, and he was still actively engaged in public service. He held the office of treasurer of the U. S. Mint from 1797 until his death, and in his final years he devoted more of his time to the study and amelioration of mental illnesses. His 1812 work, Medical Inquiries and Observations upon the Diseases of the Mind , became the standard American textbook on the subject for decades.
