Tanzania An ornamental stone found only in Tanzania the mineral naturally combines green and black zoisite, which has a hardness of 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale and corundum inclusions having a hardness of 9. Though often dull when in its rough form, when cut and polished the Zoisite scintillates and contrasts beautifully with the ruby. Because of the difference in hardness the material is difficult to carve. In the present sculpture, depicting a Native American shaman, the color variations inherent in the stone have been successfully employed. Carved from a single larger rough, the ruby portion of the mineral forms his face and braids, while the wolf skin on top his head is formed of the green and black zoisite. His eyes are set with two champagne colored diamonds ringed in 14K yellow gold. The bust rests upon a tapered base of matte polished black basalt, height overall 9 ½in. Accompanied by a rough specimen of ruby-in-zoisite measuring 5 ½ x 4 x 3 ½in. (2)
