The Naval papers of Lieutenant Vashon Baker RN, comprising: 'Remark Book', autograph manuscript comprising nautical, navigational and geographical notes in HMS Madagascar, Mediterranean and South America stations, including: description of Ionian Island and Greek harbours, with two charts, diagrams and 14 coastal profiles, 8pp; chart of coast of Brazil, HMS Dublin , 1836-37, 1p; track to and from Cronstadt, 1835, 2pp; Remarks on the Falkland Islands, by Captain [Robert] Fitzroy RN [HMS Beagle ], 1835, 5pp and Captain the Hon George Grey, HMS Cleopatra , 1836, 16pp with further particulars concerning the Falkland Islands, 5pp, including track of HMS Cleopatra round West Falkland 1836-7, and two coastal profiles; View of the town of Olinda; map of Canaan and Judaea and 4 coastal charts of Tripoli and elsewhere, 7pp; dimensions and particulars of HMS Cleopatra and HM Brig Snake , 6pp; original sheep, upper cover detached, lacks backstrip, some dampstaining, 4to. Log Book, autograph manuscript compiled by Baker, HMS Endymion , on China station including the attack during the Opium Wars upon Chin-kiang-foo (21 July 1842), Portsmouth 1841 - Plymouth 1843, with details of naval personnel including list of deaths on board (79), 101 pages plus blanks, sheep, 8vo. Watch Book, autograph manuscript inscribed 'Vashon Baker HMS Endymion 8 July 1842 Going up the Yeang-tsze-Kiang', 34 pages, oblong 8vo, original wrappers, stitched. Notebook on Steam Propulsion, autograph manuscript, 87 pages, with illustrations on tracing paper lightly mounted, 4to, contemporary half roan. Vashon Baker entered the Royal Navy in 1824 and was commissioned in 1839. The Log Book contains a list of the ships upon which he served between 1826-45.
