Beschreibung:

A gilt brass mounted P1857 Royal Engineers officer's sword with honeysuckle scroll pattern guard by Wilkinson numbered 11314 (c. 1861) on the spine. 38 1/2" oa length with 32 3/4" blade etched with VR Cypher, "Royal Engineers" and unique Pegasus style wings badge, long since retired. Original gilt brass scabbard for field officers and correct acorn sword knot. A relatively uncommon sword given the comparatively small size of the Royal Engineer officer corps. For those interested in the exploits of the Victorian military this is the exact pattern of sword that then Lieutenant John Rouse Merriott Chard, VC would have carried at Rorke's Drift. Accompanying letter sourcing Wilkinson ledger indicates that No. 11314 was completed on July 15, 1861 and purchased by "Smith & Alder," a military outfitter. Condition: Minor crack in brass guard, common with this soft brass hilted sword. Scabbard shows minor surface dents, no breaks.
