ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques. Émile, ou de l'Education . [With:] Julie, ou la nouvelle Héloïse, ou Lettres de deux Amans . A Londres [Paris: Cazin], 1781. 4 and 7 volumes, respectively. 8° (181 x 115mm). Émile : frontispiece and 7 plates after Marillier; Julie : portrait frontispiece and 12 plates after Marillier; all before letters and engraved by Ingouf, de Ghendt, Dambrun, Trière, de Launay and others. (A few plates lightly foxed, 2 with marginal stain not affecting image.) Uniformly bound in contemporary red morocco gilt, g.e., by Derome le jeune, with his ticket on front free endpaper. Provenance : partly erased monogram from first endleaf; Jones, bookplate; monogram booklabel. LARGE-PAPER ISSUE WITH THE PLATES AVANT-LETTRE . Marillier's illustrations first accompanied an edition published in 1783, although possibly the suite was not finished until later, since many copies of that edition examined by McEachern (no.41) contained no plates. This Cazin edition is more commonly found with plates by Moreau. Cohen-de Ricci 903-4, 906; J. McEachern ( Bibliography of the writings of Jean Jacques Rousseau to 1800 , Oxford: 1989) 38b. (7)
