ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques (1712-1778). Émile, ou De l'Éducation , "Amsterdam: Jean Néaulme" [Lyons: Bruyset], 1762. 5 volumes in 4, 12° (180 x 100 mm.). Half-titles, 5 engraved frontispieces by Eisen. (2 words supplied in manuscript as required on p.143, vol.I, some minor marginal worming at upper hinge of vol. I, one page torn and repaired without loss, light marginal dampstaining to a few leaves of vols. III and IV, occasional spotting and browning.) Contemporary marbled paper wrappers (slightly rubbed), uncut. Provenance : A. Pittarello (inscription on flyleaf). Second Lyons edition. The editorial history of Émile is quite complicated due to the number of publishers and close similarity of editions, but McEachern has teased out the distinctions in his fine Bibliography of Rousseau. Rousseau signed originally an agreement in November 1761 with Nicolas-Bonaventure Duchesne, publisher in Paris. Duchesne, in turn, "signed an agreement with Jean Néaulme, a Dutch publisher... to undertake an edition parallel to Duchesne's for distribution outside France... Unknown to Rousseau and Néaulme, Duchesne contracted a similar agreement with the Lyon publisher Jean-Marie Bruyset, probably in late November or early December 1761... References to Bruyset's edition, which was undertaken without Rousseau's knowledge or consent, are naturally vague and infrequent" (McEachern, p. 16-17). McEachern II, p.115; Brunet IV, 1426; Tchemerzine X, 45. (4)
