Collation: \Kp\k 4, A-L 4; 10 woodcut plates (8 folded). With 9 large woodcuts in the text (two-full-page), woodcut arms of the city on title, woodcut initials and headpieces. (Fol. I3 supplied from another copy, repair to four plates affecting image, light waterstain in lower blank margins of a dozen leaves.) Red morocco gilt of c. 1800, gilt edges. Provenance : Marye de Merval, a Rouen family (19th-century armorial bookplate); Sylvain Brunschwig (bookplate, 1955 Geneva sale, lot 404); Lathrop Harper (sold to Gourary 1956). Petit Val's issue of the FIRST EDITION, which he shared with three other Rouennais publishers: Martin le Mesgissier, Georges Loyselet and Jean Crevel (Ruggieri 328). They were issued the Royal privilege for this account two weeks after the event, but took three years to commission the plates. The Rouen entry of HENRI IV was celebrated on 16th October 1596 with elaborate processions, triumphal arches, angelic music and declamation descending on the king from an artificial heaven, an obelisk and a column constructed for the occasion, and on 24th October with the spectacle of a naval battle on the river Seine. No artist is acknowledged for conceiving these stagings and constructions, but all is duly and finely reproduced in woodcut. RARE. Brunet II, 1003; Vinet 478.
