Title: Roster of Officers & Civil Agents on duty in the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands [with] two circular letters relating to the Bureau - all framed together Author: Place: Georgia Publisher: Date: 1868 Description: Includes: Roster of Officers & Civil Agents... Printed in blue, with eagle & flag emblem. 34,5x28 cm. Nov. 1, 1868. Circular letter written by the order of Col. Caleb C. Sibley, relating to complaints of "red tape" from the starving people of Georgia. May 13, 1867. Circular letter forwarding the names of "all freed-people who have been murdered or assaulted, with intent to kill... and the names and color of parties killing or inflicting injuries..." A revealing group of documents, the Civil War was over, but the underlying grievances and racial attitudes remain. The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands (i.e. Freedmen's Bureau), was a federal government agency established in 1865 to aid freed slaves in the South during the Reconstruction. It was especially active in setting up, monitoring, and enforcing labor contracts for both men and women. It also set up a new system of health care for the freedmen. It was not highly regarded by the white southerners. The two circulars are signed by Captain William Royal. He was captain of Company F, 9th Colored Infantry Regiment, during the Civil War, and, after the war, a Freedmen’s Bureau agent in Georgia. Lot Amendments Condition: Overall very good, not examined out of frame. Item number: 277309a
