ROOSEVELT, Theodore. Typed letter signed (“Theodore Roosevelt”), as Former President, to William A. Prendergast (1867-1954), New York, 10 May 1912. 1 page, 8vo, The Outlook stationery, small closed tears along top edge and ends of center crease . “WILL YOU NOMINATE ME AT THE CHICAGO CONVENTION?” reads this letter in full. The answer was Yes. Prendergast, the comptroller for the City of New York, and an ardent progressive, mounted the podium at the Bull Moose convention in Chicago on 7 August 1912, at nearly 2:30 in the morning, to put T.R.’s name in nomination. “Of course I accept,” was Roosevelt’s terse reply when the delegates nominated him. He ran on one of the most liberal platforms ever put forth by a major American political party, calling for woman’s suffrage, direct election of Senators, social security, a national health service, referendum and recall to unseat corrupt legislators, a national veto (by referendum) against Supreme Court decisions, strict regulation of corporations, and strong protections for workers’ rights and labor unions, among many other measures. Prendergast was followed on the podium by Jane Addams, the great Chicago reformer and activist, who was the first woman to address a major party convention. Roosevelt won 27 percent of the popular vote in November—the highest ever garnered by a third-party candidate—and bested Taft. But by splitting the Republican vote he guaranteed Woodrow Wilson’s victory, with just 42 percent of the popular vote.
