ROOSEVELT, THEODORE, President . Typed letter signed ("Theodore Roosevelt") as President, to Benjamin Wheeler, President of the University of California, Washington, D.C., 26 November 1907. 2 pages, 4to, on White House stationery, marked "Private" and with 11 words added in ink by Roosevelt: WALL-STREET LAWLESSNESS.: "...It certainly does seem as if the depression [the Panic of 1907] ought not to be long-lived. Of course, advantage is taken of it to attack me, and therefore Taft. The Wall Street crowd are for [Charles Evans] Hughes [Republican candidate for NY Governor], in my judgement mainly because they are for anyone who they think will be far away from me...I do not think that now there is any intention to go into matters that are over two years old unless the practices are at present continuing (I know of no such case now being counseled); but I fear that some of our capitalist friends really desire to be allowed to continue at present all the practices which were declared illegal over a year ago..." -- ROOSEVELT. Typed letter signed as President to the same, Washington, D.C. 6 April 1907. 1 page, 4to, White House stationery. "Thank you...for your very clear statement as to the corruption in San Francisco. It was, as you say, a grizzly situation..." -- ROOSEVELT. Typed letter signed as President to the same, Washington, D.C. 26 October 1908. 1 page, 4to, White House stationery. "Yes, I am enough of a westerner still to thoro[u]ghly like that address. Senator Ralph Metcalf [of California][ has just been in..." Together three items . (3)
