ROOSEVELT, Theodore (1858-1919), President . Typed letter signed ("Theodore Roosevelt") to William Laird Clowes (1856-1905), Oyster Bay, N.Y., 28 December 1898. 1 page, 4to, remnants of mounting on verso (with show-through on recto), a few holograph corrections . "I SUPPOSE YOU SAW THAT I WAS ELECTED GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK, BUT I THINK I AM PROUDEST OF HAVING BEEN COLONEL OF THE ROUGH RIDERS" POLITICS, PUBLISHING AND THE ROUGH RIDERS fill this fine letter to a fellow naval historian. "I understand your third volume is very nearly out. Pardon my troubling you, but have you any idea when the fourth will be issued, and will it contain my chapters?" T.R. "cannot help hoping I can get my account of the War of 1812 out ahead of [Alfred Thayer] Mahan's, for, of course, whatever he writes will utterly cast into the shade what I write." He closes by remarking on his recent election as governor of New York, "but I think I am proudest of having been Colonel of the Rough Riders." Mahan's Sea Power in its Relations to the War of 1812 did not appear until 1905. T.R.'s contribution to Clowes's The Royal Navy, A History from the Earliest Times to 1900 , although commissioned by Clowes in 1895, did not appear until volume six of Clowes's work, in 1901, when T.R. was president. Clowes lauded Roosevelt's contribution in his introduction, saying "he has produced a piece of work which while fair minded and generous to a degree, is as remarkable for its analytical insight as for its impartial plain speaking."
