Specially bound in grey morocco, gilt-lettered on spine, t.e.g. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FDR'S CHIEF SPEECHWRITER TO ELEANOR ROOSEVELT on the front free endpaper in volume one: "For Eleanor Roosevelt with deep affection and respect from Samuel I. Rosenman March 15, 1950." Rosenman was FDR's counsel, adviser and chief speechwriter, ghost writing many of the President's speeches from his days as New York's gubernatorial candidate to his death. Rosenman's most celebrated contribution to the Roosevelt era was the addition of the phrase "New Deal" to FDR's 1932 presidential acceptance speech. (4)
