ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. Autograph letter signed ("Franklin D Roosevelt") as President, to Mrs. Mitchell Palmer, Washington, D.C., 11 May 1936. 1 full page, 4to, integral blank, on White House stationery, with White House envelope boldly addressed by the President . Fine. AN FDR ALS FROM THE WHITE HOUSE: CONDOLENCES TO THE WIDOW OF A FORMER PRESIDENTIAL CONTENDER A sympathetic letter, very boldly penned, to the widow of the recently deceased A. Mitchell Palmer, Attorney General under Woodrow Wilson and the instigator of the Palmer Raids against dissidents and aliens. The President writes: "I am deeply distressed to hear about Mitchell--I have lost an old and devoted friend. The country has lost a patriotic servant. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you, and I know that Mrs. Roosevelt will be deeply sorry when she hears the very sad news." A. Mitchell Palmer (1872-1936), a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1920, had been Attorney General from 1919-1921 under the Wilson administration. In that role he had invoked the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918 to mount a controversial attack on dissidents, Bolsheviks, anarchists and aliens. The raids and arrests he initiated were the subject of heated debate for their disregard of basic civil liberties. Handwritten letters from the Roosevelt White House are extremely rare; only two examples have been offered at auction in the last eight years. One, dated 1937, to Harold Ickes (Smythe, 1996, $25,000) and one to Norman Davis, 1941 (Christie's, 15 December 1995, lot 116, $15,000).
