They reflect the huge revival of interest in Italian sculptural ceramics of the Renaissance in late 19th and early 20th century Britain and Europe. This vogue is illustrated in a photograph showing John Ruskin in his study at Brantwood in 1893, with a panel of the Virgin adoring the child. At this time, there was a strong market both for original Della Robbia plaques and also the copies. Their popularity was a direct influence on the foundation by Harold Rathbone of the Della Robbia Pottery in Birkenhead in 1894.
