Roman Empire, a Collection of 245 Roman Provincial Bronze Coins, mostly from Phoenicia, ca. 2nd-mid 3rd century AD, including three AE28 of Macrinus from Byblos, laureate bust of Macrinus right, rev. distyle temple and precinct with conical structure, legend below (BMC 26.103, 38), several similar coins from Berytus, tetrastyle temple with deity being crowned, eight AE28 of Gordian III from Berytus, radiate and draped bust right, rev. tetrastyle temple with bust of Astarte inside, together with an AE30 of Caracalla from Berytus, laureate bust of Caracalla right, rev. elaborate tetrastyle temple with akroteria and statue of Eros inside, along with eight other similar bronzes of smaller size, the collection being unusually rich in coins with temple reverses (over 60 pieces), other reverses show military standards, deities on ships, processional carts, etc, included as well are several Greek bronzes, particularly four AE28 of Ptolemy III with Trident countermarks, fine to near extremely fine, a fantastic assortment whose architectural types are infrequently found in such quantity (245) (lot)
