ROCKY MOUNTAINS] HAYDEN, FERDINAND V. Sun pictures of Rocky Mountain scenery, with a description of the geographical and geological... . New York: Julius Bien 1870. First edition. Three-quarters period (publisher's?) green morocco, pebbled cloth sides, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. 12 x 9 1/2 inches (30.5 x 24 cm); vii, 150 pp., with 30 albumen photographs on card mounts with printed titles, bound in on cloth guards. Neatly rebacked retaining original spine, some wear and soil to binding but a solid copy. Internally, image II with some mount soiling, occasional minor image defects, but a sound, clean copy overall. One of the great photographic view books of Western scenery, sixteen of the photographs are scenes in Utah, including the Mormon Tabernacle, twelve of Wyoming, and two are in the Sierra Nevada and include a hydraulic gold mining operation. The photographs are by A.J. Russell, and were taken along the route of the Union Pacific. Howes H 337; Sabin 31007; Goldschmidt and Naef Truthful Lens 81. C
