Imprese, stratagemi, et errori militari… [La Seconda Parte del governo della militia… ; La Terze Parte del governo della militia…]. [Edited by Tommaso Porcacchi ].
Venice: Gabriel Giolito de' Ferrari, 1566-1570-1570. 3 parts in 2 vols., 4to (202 x 144 mm). Woodcut printer's device on titles, 2 full-page woodcut illustrations, various woodcut headpieces and decorations. Uniform 18th century calf, spines gilt, marbled endpapers, blue-stained edges. Condition : the first volume with some old dampstaining to the title and first few leaves, repairs to inner margins of leaves from R1 to the end, H2/7 and Gg3-6 misbound, the second volume with occasional marginal repairs; spines chipped with loss, two labels lacking, joints split. Provenance : Arthur Hugh Smith Barry (1st Baron Barrymore, 1843-1925, Marbury Hall, Cheshire, England, armorial bookplates). first edition. This work was edited by Porcacchi and was published as part of a linked series in a scheme worked out between him and the publisher Giolito. Porcacchi's "collana historica" also included Domenico Mora's Il soldato (1570), and Rocca's De' discorsi di guerra. (1582). This marked the first use of the word "collana" or "necklace" to mean a series of publications, made up of "anelli" or "rings". Adam R-35 & R-36; cf. Censimento 16; CNCE 26486 & 48460; Cockle 534 & 540; Spaulding & Karpinski 23.
