ROBERTSON, Etienne Gaspard (1763-1837). La Minerve, vaisseau aërien destiné aux découvertes, et proposé à toutes les académies de l'Europe . Paris: Hocquet, 1820. 8 o (195 x 120 mm). 4 plates, including one folding (some minor browning, small tear to folding plate). 19th-century calf, spine gilt, edges gilt (some minor wear to joints). Provenance : Philip Hofer (bookplate). Second edition of Robertson's scheme for touring the world in an elaborate balloon he called "La Minerve." Robertson's balloon was to be 150 feet in diameter, which would sustain a ship able accomodate 60 people traveling onboard for several months making scientific observations. "La Minerve" was designed to include a small boat for emergencies, a large store for provisions, ladders of silk to allow passengers to get to all parts of the balloon, a gymnasium, a theatre and music room, a kitchen, an observatory, and several other effects necessary for the pleasure and convenience of the passengers.
