The view was a familiar one for Havell, who had purchased land in Sing-Sing (now Ossining), and built a home, Rocky Mount, into which his family moved in 1842. Many of Havell's most celebrated works depict scenes in this general vicinity. Indeed, his painting Hudson River North to Croton Point [Collection Ossining Historical Society] captures a similar vista seen by the evanescent glow of sunset, which includes a seated figure of a young man, rather than the standing figure overlooking the same view in the present work. The cows at pasture and the sailboats wending their way through the placid waters of the Hudson River, along with the dramatic double rainbow, suggest the calm after a storm, and the rising optimism of a young republic. Wax lining. Frame rubbing. Flattened pronounced craquelure. Possible 2-inch repaired tear in sky at upper right, with approximately 4 x 4-inch area of inpaint. Scattered inpaint into craquelure, most notably in area between the two rainbows. Apparent scattered inpaint in the sky. Dense varnish layer making it difficult to detect further restoration under UV light.
