(Light scattered spotting on fore-edges.) Original blue cloth gilt, upper covers with gilt 'medallions' blocked in semi-relief, top edges gilt (covers dampstained, 'medallions' slightly rubbed as usual, extremities slightly bumped and rubbed). Provenance : Cyril Longhurst (inscription from Scott). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY SCOTT TO HIS EXPEDITION SECRETARY: 'Cyril Longhurst with best wishes and in all gratitude' and signed and dated 12 October 1905. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY of Scott's account of his National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904, in which Scott invariably describes Longhurst as 'indefatigable': 'luckily, through this busy, trying time I had much assistance. Our indefatigable Secretary, Mr Longhurst, was always willing to take fresh troubles on his already overburdened shoulders, and devoted his whole energies to the work' (p. 38; see also p. 35). Mount Longhurst, in the Britannia Range on the Western Side of the Ross Ice Shelf, was named by Scott after the National Arctic Expedition Secretary. Sir Clements Robert Markham, who contributed the book's preface and had sailed on the Assistance , was instrumental in selecting Scott to lead the Discovery , rather than the scientist others preferred.
