Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) T.OLIVER (illuminator). Two vellum leaves (visible area: 17.8 x 22.8cm.) with the address from the "Manchester Athenaeum...To Captain Robert Falcon Scott, R.N., C.V.O. Commander of the British Antarctic Expedition 1901-4", dated "November 30th, 1904" and signed by the President (E. Tootal Broadhurst) and Hon. Secretary (H. Stafford Golland) of the Athenaeum, written in a gothic book-hand on ruled gold lines with one-line capitals of red touched with gold, leafy gold line fillers and three-line illuminated capitals of red or blue against contrasting grounds of pale blue or pink, and punched gold infills, within full-page borders of early gothic style in rich colours including dragons, trefoils and punched gold discs and whorls, each window-mounted in thick card mounts, the mounts tipped onto white silk guards, original blue morocco gilt, the covers with ruled panels, the upper cover with centrally-placed 'RFS' monogram, g.e., original blue cloth presentation box. Provenance : Robert Falcon Scott; by descent. A fine memento of the interest generated by Scott's first expedition, and a reminder of the punishing tour that Scott undertook after the expedition's return. The text echoes the widespread feelings of admiration that the achievements of the expedition inspired, as well as recalling a similar visit by Captain (later Sir Albert) Markham, shortly after his attainment of the Farthest North during the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876.
