(Some spotting and occasional light browning, generally inoffensive, without front blank/half-title.) Contemporary English green straight-grained morocco, finely tooled in gilt and blind, gilt inner dentelles, cream watered-silk liners and doublures, g.e., contemporary calf-covered slip-case of book form, all by ?TAYLOR & HESSEY, (very slight scuffing to extremities of covers, some damage to slip-case). A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of this 'BEAUTIFUL AND INSPIRING WORK' ( Great Flower Books ). A very attractive monograph on citrus fruit with Redouté-esque plates. Risso was a French pharmacist and a 'pioneer botanist of the Alpes maritimes' (Stafleu). Poiteau provided not only the illustrations, but also much of the information on the varieties of citrus fruit native to the Tropics. The work was published in 19 fascicles between July 1818 and August 1820, although Stafleu records an issue with a title page dated 1818-1822, published by Audot. The binding blanks are watermarked 1815. The tentative attribution of the binding to Taylor & Hessey is based on a single (but distinctive) roll that also appears on item 274, Maggs cat.1075. However, circumstantial evidence appears to be against the attribution, they are known to have been most active at a slightly earlier date than this binding, and were also quite assiduous signers of their bindings; Ramsden lists four different forms of signature.
